Earthquake in Japan

Dear All

We wish to give you a little update of the impact of the Japanese tsunami and the nuclear catastrophe on our assortment.

Japan is still getting organized to re-build the damage done by the Tsunami. We are in contact with the people of a very sustainable investment project that is focusing on reconstructing schools kitchens and canteens and educating school personnel, pupils and their parents to traditional cooking. If you wish to support the re-construction of the ruined areas, please feel free to donate whatever you can afford. (see picture on the right side).

In the meantime we have adapted our purchasing policy.

We have stopped sourcing our seaweed from the Japanese waters as we can’t guarantee 0% radioactive contamination. All our seaweed are now harvested in the Atlantic ocean, on the coast of Bretagne, France.

All products coming from Japan, without exception, are being checked for radioactivity before leaving the country. The majority of goods coming from Japan are checked by the Belgian Food Agency before leaving the harbor of Antwerp. The products that weren’t tested by the Belgian authorities are checked in a specialized lab, in collaboration at the university of Ghent, Belgium. Philip Vanden Abeele, our Quality manager, says: “Today, we haven’t found ANY abnormal radioactivity level in the products sourced from Japan. We are very happy that this strict tracability ensures us 100% safety in our products. To achieve this we measure the different Beckerel/kg for different elements (such as iodine, cesium, but also the natural activity of the Potassium) through the technique of luminescence to track any abnormal radiation”.

Our pledge is to ensure you get healthy and safe products.

Should you have any questions, please do contact us.

Warm regards,

The Lima team.
